Well, I could not have made a better list myself. Five Things Linus Torvalds Has Learned About Managing Software Projects
- Folks: When I look back at Aaron, Balaji, Bob, Hank, Ken, Layne, Mike, James, Joanne, Jim, John, Randy, Tim, and all the others I had the privilege to work with (this list is in alphabetical order, mind you), I could not agree more. Get the right folks, and keep in touch with them until you decide that you will hang the bat to the wall. The right folks make all the difference.
- Be Trustworthy: Well, let others be the judge whether I can be trusted. Really hard to know, really easy to work to.
- Be Honest: I never lied to any of my staff.
- Hands-Off Management: Some of my team mates were a little frightened about the level of freedom I gave them. I enjoy watching folks dive in and learn the ropes. And cover for them when they crash land.
- Candor: You know my thoughts about being direct (not a problem for a German INTP) and transparent.
Loving this list tempered by experience. |
