I found this article so topical: 5 Ways to Keep Your Team Intact | Team Taskmaster | BNET
Yesterday, I had the privilege to speak to Jalal Bagherli during the Entrepreneur Country event in London. We talked a lot about turnaround management. There is an option in my professional life to help a struggling company right itself. This article, plus the very complimentary advice I got from Jalal, will definitely help. Here are the suggestions to create a great place to work: - Create an attractive lifestyle for your people
How to mix work, career, family, and interests is a really tough one for the boss. I know, for example, that my performance goes down if I do not work out and do yoga on a regular basis. Sure, skipping those will add an hour to a busy day, and sometimes that is the only way to get stuff done, but it has to be a rarity. The leadership challenge here is to have the touch to prevent abuse. - Get them invested in the business
Jalal suggests to go beyond equity and have the staff participate in cash flow information. Tell them how much money is left, so that they can make the tough decisions to preserve cash on their own. By being invested in the business, the are able and driven to make decisions, which makes the whole team for effective. - Choose clients wisely
Oh yeah! When there is a choice, actually evaluate the profitability of a client and his project. Don't look at the size of the cake, make sure you will actually be able to eat it. - Foster loyalty by putting family first
There is no doubt in my mind that family comes first. Heck, I scuttled a high-powered corporate career that was going places to start a family. - Acknowledge accomplishments publicly and often
To me, that is the way I understand Toyota's one-sheet. Communicate successes and challenges often, in appropriate detail, and with candor. I found that to be really effective in generating accountability and commitment. I hope that I did at least some of these things right for my past teams. |
