My Articles

Some of my work time in Winter 2008/09 was spent writing a chapter for a newly published book. Scott Rummler, the editor, had invited me to share my experience with online collaboration systems, and their avenues for improvement.

That was fun, so I wrote a chapter called “Speak first, then what?”. It tries to raise the awareness of one of the larger issues with non-present communication: listening is far less enforced that in the real world (where most people are bad listeners to begin with).

Based on this premise, I started to think about systematic ways of improving the pay-attention-and-listen portion of collaboration. I created a fictional user interface and workflow structure that will enforce the desired behaviors, usually through a mix of social and automated interactions.
