The Future

There is a lot going on in my life right now. Here are my thoughts and expectations about the next 20 odd years. How much a baby changes those! I would have given a different list just 4 years ago.

My son Evan Marty HeuerFor my 40s, I have set the goal to take on much larger responsibilities in a company that matters (socially or ecologically: I have a son to preserve this world for). That means:

  • really getting the hang of the family-work-life balance thing
  • get some operational experience, preferably in a software-based business facing a consumer
  • the acquisitive side of Innovation Management, including Business Development, is something I need to get experiences in
  • a Technology startup, preferably in the consumer space, would be a very tempting thing, as would be the head of an R&D department startup
  • Dispersed Product Development in China or PacRim with global aspirations

Location is not at all part of the consideration, as long as I have good medical facilities and good schools for my kids. There will be a rather long lag, though, between me starting work somewhere and my family moving. We are in an almost ideal situation right now, with my parents in the same house (with a LARGE garden), which makes us very cautious in moving the household. I will commute (welcome back, elite airline status).

In my 60's, I would like to refocus my energy towards organizing mentoring structures between seasoned veterans and young college graduates. This was (and still is) the most rewarding work of my life, and I would like to make that the focus of my activities. Sounds cheesy, I know, I just love to develop people.
