Cost Capture and Analysis Tool PDF Print E-mail

For Wellmann Kitchen, the then leading kitchen cabinet manufacturer in Europe, I developed a operations cost capture and reporting application for the logistics department "Transwell". This work was done in 1995.

I designed an application which is in use to this day. It linked to the corporate mainframe and pulled order data in a daily load. From that order data the routes the department drove were constructed. A separate distance system allowed for the calculation of driven kilometers. The internal IT department mandated the use of Borland Delphi, though this framework was never before employed internally. It was basically spearheading the introduction. The company itself was a pure mainframe house.

The system's capabilities were so substantially better than any of the internally provided solutions that it became the backbone for the P&L analysis of Transwell. In the first year it provided evidence of wrong tariffs, resulting in cost avoidance ROI of 1000%. The work took less than 3 months.

Starting with an in-depth AS-IS and Needs Analysis with the current process owner, I used rapid prototyping with a daily build to engage the user in an incremental improvement scheme. She was involved in the system development and design from the start, actively incorporating her ideas and requirements into the system. Here is a list of capabilities:

  • Data-driven configuration
  • Data-driven master data configuration
  • Data-driven forms with configuration capabilities
  • Published data model
  • Extensive reporting capabilities inside the system
  • Extensive flexible reporting system using Crystal Reports

Unfortunately, there are no screenshots available any more that survived my move to the USA and back to Germany.
